Dara

Frontier fortress-town in upper Mesopotamia (q.v.); also called Anastasiopolis. It was built by Anastasios I (q.v.) to counteract the nearby Persian fortress of Nisibis (q.v.). The battle of Dara in 530, described in detail by Prokopios of Caesarea (q.v.), was won by Belisarios (q.v.) against the forces of Kavad of Persia (qq.v.). However, the Persians conquered and held it from 573-591, and again from 604-628. It was conquered by the Arabs (q.v.) in 639. John Kourkouas (q.v.) recaptured it in 943.
